Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia


The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Built in Neo-Byzantine style, it serves as the cathedral church of the Patriarch of Bulgaria and is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world, as well as one of Sofia's symbols and primary tourist attractions. The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia can hold 10,000 people inside.


Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi / Sameba


The Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi is the main Cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church located in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Constructed between 1995 and 2004, it is the third-tallest Eastern Orthodox Cathedral in the World. Sameba is a synthesis of traditional styles dominating the Georgian church architecture at various stages in history and has some Byzantine undertones.


Hagia Sophia, Turkey

Hagia Sophia, was an early Christian church and later an Eastern Orthodox church. It was made into a mosque in 1453 by the Turks and changed into a museum in 1935. It is located in Istanbul, Turkey. It is often said to be one of the greatest, and most beautiful buildings in history.

St Stephen's Cathedral

St. Stephen's Cathedral is found in Vienna, Austria. It has a clear Romanesque and Gothic form. The large place before it is called Stephansplatz (St. Stephen's place). It lies in the center of Vienna.













Basilica of Our Lady of Licheń

The Basilica of Our Lady of Licheń is a Roman Catholic church located in the village of Licheń Stary near Konin in the Greater Poland Voivodeship in Poland. It was designed by Barbara Bielecka and built between 1994 and 2004. The construction was funded by pilgrims' donations.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro is a Roman Catholic minor basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, the administrative capital of Côte d'Ivoire. The basilica was constructed between 1985 and 1989 at a cost of $300 million. The design of the dome and encircled plaza are clearly inspired by those of the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican City, although it is not an outright replica.

Myeongdong Cathedral

 


    The Cathedral Church of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception also known as Myeongdong Cathedral, is a prominent Latin-rite Roman Catholic church located in the Myeongdong neighborhood of Jung-gu, Seoul Korea. The building is a community landmark and a notable symbol of Catholicism in Korea. The church is dedicated in honor of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the principal patroness of Korea and the Korean people.
The cathedral itself is one of the earliest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Korea, although lacking exterior ornamentation but has many stain-glass windows filled with religious art. It is also the seat of the Archbishop of Seoul, Andrew Yeom Soo-jung, the highest Catholic prelate in the country.

    The Sé Cathedral of Santa Catarina, known as Se Cathedral, is the cathedral of the Latin Rite Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Goa and Daman and the seat of the Patriarch of the East Indies. Located in Old Goa, India, the largest church in India is dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria. It is one of the oldest and most celebrated religious buildings in Goa and is one of the largest churches in Asia.

Seville Cathedral


    The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, better known as Seville Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Seville (Andalusia, Spain). It is the largest Gothic cathedral and the third-largest church in the world.
After its completion in the early 16th century, Seville Cathedral supplanted Hagia Sophia as the largest cathedral in the world, a title the Byzantine church had held for nearly a thousand years. The cathedral also serves as the burial site of Christopher Columbus. The Archbishop's Palace is located on the northeastern side of the cathedral.












Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida

    The Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida is a prominent Roman Catholic Latin-rite Basilica located in Aparecida, Brazil. It is dedicated to the Our Lady of Aparecida,  as the principal Patroness of Brazil. Its official title in Portuguese is Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida, roughly translated as Our Lady of Conception who Appeared. As of 2011, it enjoys the greatest Marian pilgrimage in the world, ranking above Our Lady of Guadalupe and Our Lady of Lourdes.

Saint Denis Basilica


   Saint Denis Basilica is famous for its architecture and as the burial place for many Kings of France. It is in the suburb of Saint Denis, which is in the north of Paris, France.
The Basilica is named after Saint Denis. Saint Denis is the patron saint of France. He was also the first Bishop of Paris.
The Basilica was a Romanesque building. In 1136 the Abbot Suger (1081 - 1155) began replacing the building, bit by bit, beginning with the west front and then with a new east end. The east end is said to be the first building in the Gothic style. It was not completed until the 13th century.

Saint Michel d'Aiguilhe



    Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe is a chapel in Aiguilhe, near Le Puy-en-Velay, France, built in 962 on a volcanic formation 85 metres (279 ft) high. The chapel is reached by 268 steps carved into the rock. It was built to celebrate the return from the pilgrimage of Saint James.
In 1429, the mother of Joan of Arc, Isabelle Romée, was said to have come to the site to pray.

Cathedral of Brasília

    The Cathedral of Brasília is the Roman Catholic cathedral serving Brasília, Brazil, and serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Brasília. It was designed by Oscar Niemeyer, and was completed and dedicated on May 31, 1970. The cathedral is a hyperboloid structure constructed from 16 concrete columns, weighing 90 tons each.









St. Basil's Cathedral


   St. Basil's Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Intercession, is a very famous cathedral in Moscow, Russia was commissioned by Ivan IV, for Saint Basil the Blessed. It is in the area called Red Square. It was built in 1555-1560.
The cathedral is very magnificent. It has 8 distinctive onion-shaped towers. The building itself is made up of separate chapels. There is a ninth spire in the middle, forming an eight-point star. 

Las Lajas Sanctuary




    Las Lajas Sanctuary is a minor basilica church located in the southern Colombian Department of Nariño, municipality of Ipiales and built inside the canyon of the Guáitara River.
The present church was built in Gothic Revival style in 1949. The name Laja comes from the name of a type of flat sedimentary rock similar to shale.

Cologne Cathedral


    Cologne Cathedral is the Roman Catholic cathedral, in Cologne in Germany. The cathedral has a height of 157.25 metres. This makes it the second-highest in Germany and the third-highest in the world. The cathedral in Ulm, the Ulm Minster at 161 m it is the highest in the world. The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro is also higher, at 158 metres, but it only has the status of a minor basilica, it is not a cathedral. The cathedral is also the third-biggest church, built in Gothic architecture. The Seville Cathedral in Seville, Spain, and the Milan Cathedral in Milan, Italy are bigger.
The Cologne Cathedral was built in Gothic style from 1248. It was planned to make the cathedral like the one in Amiens. The choir was consecrated in 1322. The first bell could be hung in one of the towers shortly after 1410. Around 1510 building was stopped, because people had lost interest. The last payment for its construction was made in 1560.
For 300 years, Cologne had an unfinished cathedral.

    Milan Cathedral is the cathedral church of Milan, Italy. Dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente, it is the seat of the Archbishop of Milan, currently Cardinal Angelo Scola.
The Gothic cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete. It is the fourth largest cathedral in the world and the largest in the Italian state territory.

Cathedral of Amiens


Amiens Cathedral is the name for a cathedral in Amiens, France. The cathedral was begun in the year 1218. It is built in the place where there was another one which burnt down. It is built in Gothic style.
With the cathedrals of Chartres and Reims it is considered one of the classical French cathedrals of the Middle Ages.

Notre-Dame de Chartres

Chartres Cathedral (in French: Notre-Dame de Chartres, which translates to Our Lady of Chartres) is a cathedral. It is in Chartres, about 80km south of Paris. It is built in the Gothic style. Together with Amiens Cathedral and Reims Cathedral it is considered to be one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture (for churches) in France.

St. Peter's Basilica

St. Peter's Basilica, which is called in Italian "Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano", is a large church in the Vatican City, in Rome, Italy. It is often called "the greatest church in Christendom". In Catholic tradition, St. Peter's Basilica is believed to be the burial place of Saint Peter, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. It is believed that Saint Peter was the first Bishop of Rome.

The Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família commonly known as the Sagrada Família, is a large Roman Catholic church in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926). Although not finished, the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in November 2010 was consecrated (dedicated to a special purpose) and made a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI.
Though building of the Sagrada Família had begun in 1882, Gaudí started working on it in 1883, taking over the project and changing it with his architectural and type of engineering.
Gaudí worked on it until he died, and at the time of his death in 1926, less than a quarter of the building was finished. The Sagrada Família's building moved slowly as it needed on private donations (people giving money to it) and was temporarily stopped by the Spanish Civil War—only to start again in the 1950s. Building was more than halfway done after 2010 with some of the project's biggest problems remaining and an expected finish date of 2026—100 years after Gaudí's death.

Notre Dame de Paris is a very old cathedral in Paris, France. It is one of France's most famous landmarks and many people visit it every year. The cathedral is on a small island on the River Seine. It is the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Paris, one of 23 archdioceses in France. The cathedral was built during more than two centuries. It is a very good example of Gothic Architecture in France. At the time it was finished, the cathedral was the biggest such building in Western Europe. Between 1844 and 1864, the building was renovated under the direction of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who incorporated elements into the design that the medieval building had not possessed before. The two rose windows which ornate the transept are among the biggest in Europe: each has a diameter of 13m.
